My great-great grandmother lost her husband in a mining accident and brought up her small children in the isolated bush of central Victoria. Like so many battlers on the goldfields my forebears found disappointment rather than prosperity. My maternal Scottish ancestors came to Australia in the 1850s during the mad rush for gold that lured the poor, hungry and desperate from around the globe. Here he discusses how he came to write his latest book, Lawson, the biography of Australian icon Henry Lawson.
